From Bucharest and Otopeni Airport: motorway all the way

Take the A1 towards Pitești and stay on the motorway: since June 2025 the Pitești – Curtea de Argeș section is open too, so it’s about 140 km of motorway from Bucharest to here. From central Bucharest it’s about 157 km and roughly two hours; from Otopeni Airport, 167 km.

From Constanța, drive the A2 to Bucharest, then the A0 ring road to the A1. From Galați, head through Brăila to the A2 and do the same.

From Pitești, Craiova and Târgoviște

From Pitești it’s 44 km, around 40 minutes, on the A1. From Craiova, take the Craiova – Pitești expressway, then the A1: about 178 km, roughly two hours. From Târgoviște it’s about 110 km.

From Brașov: through Bran, Rucăr and Câmpulung

From Brașov you go past Bran and Rucăr on the DN73 to Câmpulung, then on the DN73C to Curtea de Argeș. It’s about 129 km and close to three hours, on a beautiful but slow mountain road.

In summer, while the Transfăgărășan is open, you can also come over the mountains: the DN1 to Cârțișoara (about 107 km), then another 107 km on the Transfăgărășan, past Bâlea Lake, Vidraru and Poenari. It’s the longest way, but a trip in itself. More in our Transfăgărășan road trip guide.

From Sibiu, Cluj and Timișoara: along the Olt Valley

From Sibiu, take the A1 to Boița, then the Olt Valley road (DN7), where your GPS will send you along county roads to Curtea de Argeș: about 115 km, just over two hours. If you prefer national roads, carry on down the Olt Valley to Râmnicu Vâlcea and take the DN73C, about 144 km in all.

From Cluj-Napoca (about 288 km) and Timișoara (about 379 km), drive to Sibiu on the motorway first, then the same way. In summer you can also come from Sibiu over the Transfăgărășan: 51 km to Cârțișoara, then 107 km across the mountains.

From Iași

From Iași it’s about 594 km, more than seven hours without stops: head south to Bucharest on the A7 and DN2, then continue on the A1. It’s worth splitting into two days.

Without a car: coach, minibus and train

  • Coach: coaches run from Bucharest to the bus station in Curtea de Argeș, and some services also connect the town with Otopeni Airport. Timetables and tickets are on obilet.com.
  • Minibus: from Pitești you can also take the county minibuses.
  • Train: the railway reaches Curtea de Argeș from Pitești, where you change if you’re coming from Bucharest. Trains are few, so check the timetable on cfrcalatori.ro first. The station is about 4 km from us by road.
  • Plane: the nearest airport is Sibiu, about 112 km away. Bucharest Otopeni is 167 km away.
